Our story
Welcome to TUKA Coffee Roasters, where every cup tells a story. Our journey began with a simple idea: bringing the fair, sustainable, and locally sourced coffee to our community
The beginning in Costa Rica
During their first internship in Costa Rica, Miles and Ben were introduced to local agriculture. They worked with the government to help farmers bring their produce to international markets. What struck them most was the sheer scale of the monocultures, such as the vast banana plantations. They were shocked by the environmental impact of these practices. At the same time, they saw some farmers adopt polyculture, where multiple crops are grown on the same piece of land. This approach promotes a natural ecosystem and supports the return of rare animal species, such as the black panther.
First coffee import
When the corona pandemic hit, Miles and Ben were forced to return to the Netherlands. But their bond with the farmers in Costa Rica remained strong. They decided to help them by importing their sustainably grown coffee beans to the Netherlands. And so the seed for Tuka Coffee Roasters was planted.
The first days on the market
In order to better connect with the local community in Nijmegen and build a brand fan base, Ben and Miles started selling our tasty and sustainable coffee at the local market. In the cold and the heat, in the sun and in the rain: they made sure to be there with coffee beans and fresh cappuccinos for our very first customers. This tradition still continues, every Saturday at the farmers market.
New origin and more positive impact
Tuka began to grow steadily, and we saw the need to expand our positive impact to more countries. We started by importing sustainable and ethical coffee beans from Honduras and later expanded to Colombia. Today, we offer a variety of high-quality coffees from these regions and plan to expand further to support even more farmers.
