De Roots van jouw Koffie
The Duriaux family
Since 1993, Georges, Liliana and (later) their son Jean-Yves have managed Reserva El Jaguar, a 100-hectare private nature reserve in Matagalpa.
What began as a deep passion for birds and nature has grown into a globally recognized bird paradise (officially recognized as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area) where more than 290 species have now been counted. The Duriaux family translates this love for biodiversity to the coffee plantations, where they prove that top quality and nature restoration reinforce each other.
Eerlijke Betaling
21% above the average ICO Other Milds €6.50/kg - but normally only ±70% of this goes to the farmer) and 67% above an indicative minimum wage (Fairtrade reference: €4.70/kg).
TUKA decouples the farmer's income from speculation on the world market. This provides the farmer with the financial stability to no longer have to live from harvest to harvest.
Regio & Terroir
The farm is nestled deep in the cloud forest at an altitude of 1,300 to 1,350 meters. Here, the Duriaux family produces hybrid coffee varieties, which combine the quality of Arabica with the resilience needed in a wild and lower-lying ecosystem. Due to the constant cloud cover and the shade of the cloud forest, the cherries ripen extremely slowly, resulting in a complex acidity and a technically pure flavor profile characteristic of the best Nicaraguan microlots.
Natuurbehoud
Reserva El Jaguar serves as a crucial "biological bridge" on the migratory routes of birds between North and South America. The Duriaux family employs a strict agroforestry system where coffee plants grow under a layered forest canopy that serves as a vital stopover for hundreds of bird species. By using solar dryers and closed water purification systems during processing, the impact on local water sources is eliminated, actively protecting and restoring the cloud forest and its native flora and fauna.
