De Roots van jouw Koffie

Boer

The Duriaux family

Since 1993, Georges, Liliana and (later) their son Jean-Yves have managed Reserva El Jaguar, a 100-hectare private nature reserve in Matagalpa.

What began as a deep passion for birds and nature has grown into a globally recognized bird paradise (officially recognized as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area) where more than 290 species have now been counted. The Duriaux family translates this love for biodiversity to their coffee plantations, proving that top quality and nature restoration reinforce each other.

TUKA decouples the farmer's income from speculation on the world market. This offers the farmer the financial stability to no longer have to live from harvest to harvest.

Regio & Terroir

The farm is located deep in the cloud forest at an altitude of 1,300 to 1,350 metres. The Duriaux family produces hybrid coffee varieties here, combining the quality of Arabica with the resilience required in a wild and lower-lying ecosystem. Due to the constant cloud cover and the shade of the cloud forest, the berries ripen extremely slowly, resulting in a complex acidity and a technically clean flavour profile that is characteristic of the best Nicaraguan microlots.

Oerwoud

Natuurbehoud

Reserva El Jaguar acts as a crucial "biological bridge" on the migration routes of migratory birds between North and South America. The Duriaux family employs a strict agroforestry system where coffee plants grow under a layered forest canopy that serves as a vital stopover for hundreds of bird species. By using solar dryers and closed water purification systems in processing, the impact on local water resources is eliminated, actively protecting and restoring the cloud forest and its indigenous flora and fauna.

FAQ

What makes TUKA Coffee Roasters' La Bomba coffee from Costa Rica so unique?

La Bomba single-origin microlot coffee from Santa Maria de Dota, Costa Rica, owes its exceptional flavor to the high altitude, volcanic soils, and the expertise of local farmers. The coffee beans originate from a single, clearly defined geographic location, allowing you to savor the pure flavor of that location. A microlot is a small, rigorously selected batch of extremely high-quality coffee that emphasizes the unique flavor characteristics of a specific plot. The result is a refined, fruity, and perfectly balanced specialty coffee full of character.

What can I expect from the taste experience of TUKA's La Bomba coffee?

La Bomba is a refined and complex Gesha with notes of peach, caramel, bergamot, and a hint of whipped cream. The palate is creamy, fruity, and elegant, with a bright attack and a long, sweet finish that beautifully reveals all the nuances of this exceptional micro-lot.

How does TUKA Coffee Roasters ensure sustainability in the coffee chain?

TUKA Roasters uses a direct sourcing strategy (direct trade). We source our coffee directly from small-scale farmers in Costa Rica's biodiverse regions. By cutting out the middleman, we ensure they receive a fair return. This partnership promotes sustainability because it allows farmers to invest in quality, the environment, and their local communities. Learn more about our approach.

What is the best way to prepare La Bomba coffee for top quality?

To fully appreciate the complex flavors of La Bomba, we recommend the following recipes:
- Double espresso: 19 grams of finely ground coffee should yield 40 ml of liquid in 28 seconds.
- V60: Use 22 grams of coarsely ground coffee and 350 ml of water, with a total flow time of 2 minutes and 40 seconds.
