Many chocolate makers consider Madagascar cocoa to be among the finest in the world. It's no surprise, then, that many fine chocolate makers make their bars from this cocoa. The cocoa beans used by Krak Chocolate are somewhat different from those used by other chocolate makers because they come from the Ottange Farm. The Ottange Farm is located on the Ramena River, in northwestern Madagascar in the Sambirano Valley. It belongs to the Mava plantations and is the smallest of the eight. In 2017, the Ottange Farm won the International Cocoa Awards. Approximately 6 tons of cocoa beans are grown annually on the Ottange Farm. Most of this is used by the owner, the Ramanandraibe family, to make their own chocolate. A small portion is sold, and Krak Chocolate is fortunate enough to be able to make its bars from this cocoa.
