The origins of cocoa in Saint Vincent date back to the 18th century, introduced by British colonists. The importance of cocoa declined as banana exports took over. In 2009, after European tariff protection for banana exports was removed, a trading company invested in cocoa. In 2014, this was transferred to dedicated Saint Vincentians, leading to the establishment of the Saint Vincent Cocoa Company.
With 250 hectares and working with around 100 local farmers who each work on 2 hectares, cacao thrives alongside banana, plantain, ginger, corn and native root crops. Tall coconut palms, melina and mahogany trees provide essential shade.
A central facility manages fermentation and drying, highlighted by a state-of-the-art solar dryer that perfects the moisture content of the beans to 6-7%.
